When Marvel released Iron Man in 2008 it started on an epic experiment of bringing a comic book universe to life, in which each film would build on a common story but also tell it’s own story culminating in a conclusion film for the different phases of the storyline. The filmmakers worked for years trying to make the story work but could not find the right way to continue, leaving the film languishing in development hell for years, until Emmerich came upon a thought that lead him to beginning planning two more films to create a trilogy.
