47: We’ll Always Have Endor

Star Wars Aftermath.

As Return of the Jedi faded from theaters in late 1983, Star Wars fans entered what would become known as the “Dark Times”. Toys began disappearing from the shelves and slowly Star Wars faded into the cultural zeitgeist. Before faint whispers about Special Editions and Prequels, Heir to the Empire awakened a hunger for Star Wars that had been just under the geek surface for years. It was the first book to be licensed by Lucasfilm to continue the story after Return of the Jedi. Bringing back Luke, Leia and Han as well as introducing us to Mara Jade, Grand Admiral Thrawn, Talon Karrde and a plethora of others who would become staples of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, Timothy Zahn cemented himself as the second coming of George Lucas for fans. The SWEU flourished with varied success over the 23 years it ran, ending when Disney acquired Lucasfilm and announced that the EU would be reorganized in the Legends line and a new official run of canon books and comics would be forthcoming.

In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing is joined by intrepid Rebels Bruce Gibson, Darren Moser and John Mills to talk about Star Wars Aftermath. We discuss the old SWEU and the the new canon, a new hope, characters, small cameos, things we liked, ask a question, the Amazon issue and wrap up with ratings and final thoughts.

S6: Doom of the Jedi

Star Wars: Dark Disciple.

When Disney purchased Lucasfilm in the fall of 2012 it marked the end of The Clone Wars. It was as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in horror, yet instead of being silenced, they have only continued to speak strongly, with the hashtag #SaveTheCloneWars still a staple of Twitter to this day. Since it’s demise, Dave Filoni and Pablo Hidalgo have worked tirelessly to find the best venue for all the displaced stories that were in development. It is no surprise that one of these untold stories has found it’s way into a novel.

In this supplemental episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing and John Mills dive into the latest edition to the Star Wars canon Dark Disciple by Christie Golden. We discuss a little bit of the history of the book, the writing style, what happened to redemption, Windu, a canary in the coal mines, worthy Jedi, could the story have been about Obi-Wan, foreshadowing, reconciling Yoda, the Jedi Code, an Obi-Wan question and just how good the book is.

35: Chris Pratt Barrel-Rolls

Jurassic World.

Over 20 years ago the original Jurassic Park became this highest grossing movie of the year and was followed by two sequels, generally considered mediocre. Yet 14 years after the release of Jurassic Park III, the park is open once again, but can it recapture the magic of the original?

In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing is joined by Andrea Coffman and Daniel Proulx to talk about Jurassic World. We discuss our first impressions, where the movie lost Daniel, continuing the themes of the original, caring about the finale, running in high heals, selling out, unchecked scientific research, being our own worse enemy, philosophies of science, Owen, music, other tidbits, breaking the bank and our ratings.

34: Colossal Rex

The Lost World/Jurassic Park III.

After the original Jurassic Park dominated 1993 to become that year's highest grossing film it was inevitable that there would be sequels. It took 4 years for Steven Spielberg to return the dinosaurs to the screen in The Lost World and another 4 before Joe Johnston would fulfill his wish to direct Jurassic Park III.

In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing is joined by John Mills, Megan Calcote and Mike Schindler to talk about the Jurassic Park sequels. We jump right in with The Lost World, the ways it succeeds, getting lost in translation, Malcolm as the lead, if the third time is the charm, does anything work in III, dino droppings, wrapping up with final thoughts, rankings and ratings.

33: Playing God with Fossilized Mosquitoes

Jurassic Park.

Once in a while a film comes along that captures the imaginations of everyone, from children to adults and Jurassic Park was one of these. Steve Spielberg's ode to dinosaurs awed us and in the process changed the way films were made forever.

In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing is joined by Andi VanderKolk and Will Nguyen to talk about the original Jurassic Park. We share our JPS (Jurassic Park stories), what we love so much about the film, scientific discovery vs. nature, changing film making, the music of Williams, nitpicks and if it still holds up.

26: Chrome Stormtroopers

Battlestar Galactica 1978.

In the early 60's, Glen Larson had the idea for Battlestar Galactica, originally called Adam's Ark. It was not able to find it's way to TV until Star Wars' release in 1977 when every TV network and movie studio decided to get into the "Star Game". Beginning in 1978 it did not last long, citing declining ratings and cost overruns, ABC canceled Battlestar Galactica in April 1979.

In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing and Norman Lao talk about the original Battlestar Galactica. We discuss our experiences with the show, watching things as children, watching the series now, the story, setting, production design, the mythology, the acting and if the show has staying power.

25: Paradise Lost for Pirates

Pirates of the Caribbean.

In 2002 Disney decided to make a film based on one of it's theme park rides. The Country Bears was a box office flop, yet this did not deter the studio from continuing to mining it's rides for inspiration. The very next year, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl would become a monster hit, going on to inspire 3 more films with a 5th one currently in the works.

In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing is joined by the ladies of Educating Geeks, Alice Baker and Megan Calcote to talk about the original Pirates of the Caribbean movie. We discuss the shock of learning Disney was making a movie based on another theme park ride, the casting, the way the movie winks to the audience, the surprising depth of the story, the music, production value and why this should have been just one film.

24: The Dr. No of the Marvel Franchise

Iron Man.

Some movies spend years languishing in development hell and Iron Man was one of the longest. From 1990 to 2005 it bounced around from studio to studio; it wasn't until 2006 that Marvel acquired back the rights and decided to use it as the launching pad for it's own studio as well as a cinematic universe that the film would finally materialize.

In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing is joined by Jose Munoz, Andi VanderKolk and Daniel Proulx to talk about Iron Man. We discuss the long production history of the film, our first thoughts, realism in comic book movies, The cast, the villain, story, music, direction and ask if it still holds up.

19: A Page-Turner of a Movie

The Rocketeer.

In 1982 a comic mini series came out that harkened back to the serial adventures from the 1930's. Dave Steven's Rocketeer became a classic for comic enthusiasts, with it's fast pace, noir feel, lush artwork, and more adult themes. Then the Walt Disney company did what it does best, it took a property and remade it in their own image.

In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing is joined by Darren Moser and Norman Lao to talk about The Rocketeer. We discuss the comic and whether the movie is an improvement, our first experiences with the film, Joe Johnson learning from the masters on how to direct a homage to the serial, the story, the cast, the music and whether or not it still holds up.

Kingsman.

In 1962 Dr. No hit the big screen and James Bond became the gold standard for spy movies. Throughout the years many films have parodied or paid homage to the spy genre Austin Powers, In Like Flint, Never Say Never Again are just a few examples. Spy movies have continued to be some of the most successful film franchises with The Bourne series as well as Bond still going strong and upcoming sequels are currently the works.

In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing is joined by Norman Lao to talk about the latest spy movie, Kingsman: The Secret Service based loosely on Mark Miller'c comic, The Secret Service. We discuss Matthew Vaughn choosing to direct Kingsman over Days of Future Past, being back in the spy game, the idea of a sequel, the themes of the film, the cast, whether seriousness ruins spy movies, plus a few things that just didn't work.

Jupiter Ascending.

Breaking News: Marvel has the rights to use Spider-Man in it's films and we break it down and share our thoughts on what this will mean for Spider-Man as well as the upcoming Marvel movies.

In 1999 the world of film was changed forever by a film called The Matrix. We were introduced to "bullet time" and for many, this was their first time to hear of the Wachowskis, the writers and directors. The movie left audiences cheering and eagerly anticipating more from this new powerhouse of Hollywood originality. Fast forward to 2015 and the view on them has changed; is their latest a return to the glory days or another disappointment from a once promising team?

In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing is joined by Mike Schindler to discuss Jupiter Ascending. We talk through our first impressions from the marketing, making original sic-fi movies, the story, the conversations this film as generated, the visuals, casting, music, rounding out by ranking this in the Wachowski's body of work.

14: The Roger Moore of Indiana Jones

Raiders of the Lost Ark.

As George Lucas vacationed in Hawaii after finishing the original Star Wars, he is joined by Steven Spielberg. Spielberg mentioned that he wants to direct a Bond movie and George tells him he has something better; Indiana Smith. Steven would go on to direct and fortuitously convince George to change the name to Indiana Jones. The rest, as they say, is cinema history.

In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing is joined by John Champion and Norman Lao to talk about the original Indy adventure Raiders of the Lost Ark. We discuss if Indy had been played by Tom Selleck, our memories associated with seeing the film for the first time and what kept us coming back for more, the basis for the series, what we love and what still bugs us about the film, the soundtrack, Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, plus the question, "Does it hold up for today's audience?".

13: Princess Bride Status

Galaxy Quest.

1999 saw the release of three films aimed at sci-fi fandom and more specifically, Star Trek - Free Enterprise, Trekkies and Galaxy Quest. Galaxy Quest seemed to hit that sweet spot for many fans and at Star Trek Las Vegas it's ranked as a Star Trek Movie.

In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing is joined by Norman Lao and Andi VanderKolk to talk about Galaxy Quest. We ask the question of whether it should be considered a Star Trek film, our reactions to the movie then and now, themes, crew dynamics, what works, as well as what doesn't, if the movie would have been better if it had been rated R and if there should be a sequel.

11: A Badass Battle Ram

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

Peter Jackson has been thinking about and working in Middle Earth since 1995 and finally, at the close of 2014 the defining chapter is here. From it's beginnings as  two films and a companion piece, all the way to a trilogy of Hobbit films, the process has been anything but smooth. Finally the two trilogies are now complete and so ends the adventures in Jackson's Middle Earth.

In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing is joined once again by Alice Baker and Megan Calcote from Educating Geeks as well as Norman Lao to talk though this final Hobbit film. We discuss everything from the 48fps, to the different battles to the themes, even getting a little personal in the analysis. Will you follow us, one last time?

10: They Didn't Think This Through

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

The middle movie of a trilogy has always been the hardest to do. It relies on the first film, has to set up the last film and try stand up on it's own. Some movies have done this really well, such as The Empire Strikes Back and The Two Towers. The Desolation of Smaug also had the distinction of being the film that had the most added to it when the duology became a trilogy. Peter Jackson clearly had his work cut out for him.

In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing is joined once again by Megan Calcote of Educating Geeks to discuss the second Hobbit film. We dive into the difference in filming time Jackson had and it's effect on the look of this new trilogy, the new locations we see, Bree, Beorn's House, Mirkwood, the Woodland Realm, Laketown and Erebor. All this while talking about the new characters and themes from the film.
